Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX DG MACRO HSM

Full frame sized image

Lenses that create APS-C sized image are designed for digital only. They cannot be used on cameras that have image sensor larger than the APS-C format. These lenses are not suitable for film cameras either.

Ultrasonic AF

Lenses with ultrasonic focusing mechanism tend to be quiter and faster than traditionally focusing lenses.

One or more Low Dispersion lens element is used

Low Dispersion lens elements help to reduce chromatic aberration.

Not stabilized

Image stabilization helps to reduce blur caused by hand shake, especially at high focal length or in low light situations. Image stabilization can give 1 to 3 stop advantage over none stabilized lens, based on the reciprocal rule.

Metal mount

Cheaper lenses are usually equipped with plastic mount, while more expensive, professional lenses have metal mount. In general, metal mounts are more durable, and a good thing to have when lenses are changed a lot. When a camera is used mainly with one lens, the material of the lens mount is not that important.

Internal Focusing

Internally focusing lenses don't change their size while setting focus.

Internal Zoom

Internally zooming lenses don't change their size while focal length is changing.

The front lens is fixed

The fixed front lens is not rotating during zoom and/or focusing. This allows the photographer to use petal shaped lens hood. Fixed front lenses also make the use of polarization filters a lot easier.

No drop-in filter support

Drop-in filters are used in those lenses where either the front lens is too large, or the field of view doesn't permit the use of traditional filters at the front of the lens. Usually bright tele and ultra-wide angle lenses support this filter type.

This large aperture telephoto zoom lens has a minimum focusing distance of 100cm throughout the entire zoom range. It is very convenient for close-up photography. This lens uses two ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) glasses and two SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glasses for utmost correction against chromatic aberrations. This lens’ super multi layer lens coating reduce flare and ghost, which is a common problem with digital cameras. This lens incorporates HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), which ensures a quiet and high-speed AF. The lens design incorporates an inner focusing and inner zooming systems. The overall length of the lens does not change during focusing and zooming, ensuring convenient handling. When this lens is used with the 1.4x EX DG APO or 2x EX DG APO Tele Converters (optional), it becomes a 98-280mm F4 AF telephoto zoom lens or a 140-400mm F5.6 AF telephoto zoom lens respectively.

good lense... bad amazon

May 21, 2007

I am removing my review as Amazon feels it can edit reviews to only leave the positives about a product. They sited the review rules as the reason for it. However; after careful review there was no rule to justify re-writing my review to fit thier needs.

SIGMA Has it ALL for $475 Less

May 3, 2007

After Lot's of research, and hand's on at Canoga Camera I decided to purchase the Sigma over the Canon.

What you get for $839 is amazing package!
-lens
-case with shoulder strap
-hood
-tripod collar

The collar alone is worth $145. That is what you have to pay extra for the Canon f/2.8L.

It focuses very fast & precise. The images are absolutely stunning. I also like the matte black finish rather than the Stand Out White.

So it is up to you if you want to spend an additional $475 for the White "Cannon"

Great moderately priced sports lens

Oct 14, 2007

I've now been shooting sports with this lens for over a year and am absolutely in love with it. Have shot and sold thousands of super sharp publication quality images. I purchased this lens a year ago as an upgrade from my Canon 70-300. Wow!!! I could not believe the sharpness of the images I was now shooting. I shoot sports with a monopod from the sidelines particularly football and lacrosse. Now I am getting crystal clear helmeted faces at 50 yards. This lens is silky smooth and a dream upgrade. The lens collar is well marked and allows easy and smooth transition from horizontal to vertical. The zoom moves from 200 to 100mm with a quick flip of my finger as the action gets close. I've been shooting my kids sports for 15 years and am absolutely delighted with this lens but you better have a monopod because it's a big heavy hunk of glass and not a carry around vacation shooter. It also makes a great portrait lens when tripod mounted with the sharpest eyelashes I have ever shot with any lens.

Great Lense

May 22, 2007

I found this lense to be very versitale and much better than my Tameron lense of equal caliber. It a little heavy but about a pound less than the Canon. I love it so far.

Great all around lens

Dec 1, 2007

I really have enjoyed this lens so far. My passion would be for sports, particularly my children's soccer games. I took one of the pictures above handheld, but would recommend a tripod for any other games. Her games are close and my son's games are a little trickier to get a good shot. I use a Canon Xti and really like how it works. I have taken school photos with this lens, and they have surpassed any professional taking them in the past. The only reason I didn't give the lens a 5 star is because mine is at the service dept at Sigma due to the AF not working. The nice thing is the lens carries a four year warranty. I'm hoping that it's just a fluke since I've had the lens only two weeks now. You will not be disappointed buying this lens. I thought I should get the Canon version, but have been extremely pleased so far with this lens. I also have the 70-300mm, f/4-5.6 Canon lens, but like others have mentioned it's nice to have that macro capability. Good Luck:)

Great Lens for the Price!!

May 13, 2007

I recently just picked up this lens for myself. I have to say this is one of the best lenses I have used. The auto-focus is fast and silent. It doens't hunt, even when you zoom straight to 200mm. I also love that the minimum focusing distance is 3 feet. My dad has an older version of this lens for the Minolta mount and he is envious of the focusing distance.

I will say that at 200mm at f/2.8, there is a touch of softness, but it's not objectionable for my taste. I would recommend trying this lens if you can to make sure you would be willing to deal with the softness. Otherwise at all other focal lengths, it is tack sharp!

This lens is also heavy at 3 pounds. It can get tiring to hold it all day long, so I would recommend a monopod for support. Overall, I really love this lens and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good telephoto lens.

Wonderful lens!

Jan 20, 2008

I'm a huge fan of my Sigma 70-200 2.8. I do a lot of indoor sports photography and can get some really crisp pictures with this lens. The only thing is that the lens that I was sent by amazon is different from the one pictured here. It did not have an automatic/manual switch on the lens, which I thought would be a problem with my D40, but DOES still work with my D40- both manual and automatic.

I highly recommend this lens. It's cheaper than the alternatives and gets the job done.
