Műanyag bajonett

Az olcsóbb objektívek általában műanyag, míg a drágábbak fém bajonettel készülnek. Általában a fém bajonettek tartósabbak, így gyakori objektívcserénék ez a szerencsésebb. Ha egy fényképezőgépet főleg egy objektívvel használunk, akkor a bajonett anyaga nem annyira lényeges.

 

Nem belső élességállítású

A belső élességállítású objektívek mérete az élességállítás során nem változik.

 

Nem belső zoomos

A belső zoomos objektívek mérete a gyújtótávolság állításakor (zoomoláskor) nem változik.

 

A frontlencse elfordul

A fix frontlencse az élesség és/vagy a gyújtótávolság állításakor nem fordul el. Ez lehetővé teszi, hogy a fotós szirom alakú napellenzőt használjon. A fix frontlencse megjönnyíti a polarizációs szűrők használatát is.

 

Nem időjárásálló

Az időjárásálló objektívek védettek a víz és a por ellen. Ugyan nem vízállóak, de esőben és más nedves, párás környezetben is jól használhatók. Egyes szigetelések csak a víz vagy csak a por ellen védenek, nem mindkettő ellen. A szigetelés csak akkor működik, ha az objektív egy hasonló módon szigetelt vázon van.

A becsúsztatható szűrőket olyan objektíveknél alkalmazzák, amelyek frontlencséje túl nagy, illetve amelyek látószöge túl nagy ahhoz, hogy hagyományos szűrőket lehessen rájuk tenni. Általában a nagy fényerejű tele, illetve az ultra-nagy látószögű objektíveknél fordul elő ez a megoldás.

OK starter lens, but there are better choices

I agree totally with the other reviewers who say that it's fine for basic "snapshots" but that's about all. If you're simply looking to step up to a Digital SLR from a point and shoot, then buy the Canon Digital Rebel XT kit that comes with this lens. It's lightweight and fine for nice quality landscapes and snapshots. This however would NOT be my first choice.

If you want exceptional pictures or if you think that you might ever step up to a nicer camera, buy only the camera body and get an images stabilized all purpose lens like the Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens. This lens will let you take hand held pictures that will be sharp 2 whole shutter speeds slower than a non-stabilized lens will. The zoom range will allow every thing from nice wide angle landscapes at the lower end to moderate telephoto and excellent portraits at the higher magnification end.

You'll probably end up keeping this on your camera as your default lens. I have an IS 75-300 and a 60mm macro that I use on occasion, but the 28-135 is my workhorse.

Solid basic lens, akward when used with polarizing filter

I purchased this lens after buying an EOS 30D body-only, and discovering that the 1.6 crop factor was far too severe for my shooting requirements and existing EF lenses. This lens was intended to be used as the equivalent of my old EF 28-105mm, and in wide angle, it does an extremely good job getting me just as wide as I'm used to going, plus just a bit more, even if I don't get quite the reach on the zoom end even after the 1.6 crop factor.

Intending to use it as a knock-around low-end lens, I bought mine used, and couldn't be happier with what I got for the price, and frankly was amazed at the sharpness and clarity and comparable quality of image I'm getting as compared to my more expensive EF lenses.

The only awkward thing about this lens is that the focal ring is on the outer edge of the lens. If you use a polarizing filter, where the orientation of the filter is critical, you'll find that the act of focusing will spin the filter along with the focal ring. There's not enough resistance on the focal ring to allow for filter adjustment after AF has been locked on target. In essence, this renders this lens incompatible for use with any sort of adjustable filter.

This is easily my lightest weight lens I now own. It feels like nothing at all at the end of my camera, which took some getting used to. Despite good performance, feels a bit like a toy, like something you'd expect to screw onto a Kiddie camera not a Canon.

This lens is plenty quiet and quick focusing for my needs although a quieter, faster fousing USM version is also available.

Good, for the price.

I received this as a kit lens with my Rebel XTi.

This is by no means a high-performance lens, but it provides a good range in focal length from wide to telephoto. It's good for beginners like me who haven't yet invested in nicer prime lenses of various focal lengths.

The downside is that it is a slow lens. Indoor shots are virtually impossible without the use of a flash.

Overall, it's a good lens to start out with if you're new to SLRs, but once you know what you're doing you'll want to upgrade to something nicer.

No better than a point-n-shoot camera lens

I've had the Rebel XT and this "kit" lens for over a year, and the lens seems to be mediocre at best. I stuck with Canon when buying my first DSLR based on loving the optics of my old Canon Powershot S20. Sometimes I think the old S20 had better optics than this kit lens (although the many other limitations of that camera pushed me to the DSLR market).

I also have the 50mm f1.8 lens and the 75-300mm 4-5.6 lenses. The 50mm lens is better WHEN it focuses right, and the 75-300mm is amazing (except for when my hands are too shaky...I definitely need an Image Stabilization lens).

For anyone looking to buy a Rebel, buy the body only and spend a little extra on a better lens than this one. I will soon be getting the EF-S 17-85 f4-5.6 lens as my replacement for this lens.

If I were to make a suggestion to someone looking for their first DSLR from Canon, I would actually suggest starting with the 40D with it's "kit" 28-135 IS lens.

This is the kit lens that comes with Canon Rebel XTs models and others. I just bought the XT 350 with this lens. I'm a pure newbie to SLR photography, but I dove right in since I have been a avid shooter with 35mm for years.

I did a lot of research and read reviews on different type of lens, as I was concerned with the (UNFAIR) bad rep of this kit lens after I ordered the camera. Even from expert review sites, they admit the dogged perception of this lens is unfair indeed and this is actually a very good everyday lens.

After 2 weeks of use, I have to agree. Here are the reasons:

1) Afford ability: You can pick this lens used/aftermarket easily for under $100. It is worth every penny of that. The new, more expensive model with Image Stabilization (IS) is better, but overrated. I'm a beginner and it only took me a week of learning to start getting the most out of this lens. Its image quality is terrific. You can't beat the value from this!

2) Color and Sharpness: The lens, is very sharp and can capture great images. The reason most newbies doesn't like this, is because it doesn't work well with the point-n-shoot modes on the SLRs. I was frustrated too at first as images wasn't "right", but it's the user, not the lens. Play with the P mode instead of the point and shoot modes. Learn to use the exposure settings (based on light conditions, adjust your light conditions higher/lower to capture the amount of light appropriately, and use the build in flash occasionally in very bright conditions. keep experimenting, and you will see this lens' potential. I am very happy with my latest set of results from my honeymoon trip so far.. they keep on getting better and better...

3) Weight, portability - As a newbie, you don't want huge zoom lens that's heavy to lug around. This is light weight from its plastic body, and easy to carry around for everyday use.

So, if you are getting started, learn to love this lens. You are using SLR for a reason, so ditch the point and shoot, start experimenting, and have fun with this. After 2-3 weeks learning curve, it will SMOKE ANY 35mm digital camera's results easily. You don't need the more expensive Image Stabilization version unless your hands shake all the time and need to take many night mode/slow shutter pictures.

This lens is worth every $ of its ~$(one benjamin) street price tag, and when you get very comfortable with SLR basics, I then recommend the
~$(four benjamins) Tamron SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 Di II LD Aspherical (IF) as its replacement. But for now, I am perfectly happy with this lens and believe you will too.
